Recorded 27 Aug 2017 @ Big Orange Sheep Studios in Brooklyn, NY.

Charlie's Prelude was originally recorded by John Kirby and his Orchestra in 1941. It is based on Frédéric Chopin's "Prelude in E Minor," and was composed by Charlie Shavers. The song was likely based upon Chopin as part of the 1941 ASCAP boycott, due to a royalty fee hike in using ASCAP-registered songs. Big band leaders sought material that was in the public domain and thus did not have the fees licensing associated with them. There are many such examples from this time period of tunes based on classical music. Still to this day, there are venues and artists which avoid playing ASCAP material to avoid paying these licensing fees.

Band-leader John Kirby, a bass player who also played tuba and trombone, previously spent time in bands with Benny Goodman, Chick Webb, Lucky Millinder, and Fletcher Henderson. Composer Charlie Shaver, a trumpet player, also composed the well-known jazz standard "Undecided."
